Explainable Software Engineering in the Public Sector The field of software engineering seeks to devise theories, methods, tools, and techniques that support the development, operation, and evolution of the digital infrastructure modern society relies on. While the software engineering capabilities have advanced substantially over the past decades, it remains challenging to deliver high quality systems in a timely and cost-effective manner. Government system in particular have a weak reputation in this respect.To better understand why, we analyze 125 complex software projects in the public sector in The Netherlands. The projects are described in public reports published by the Advisory Council on IT Assessments (AcICT), which advises the Dutch parliament and cabinet on riks and chances of success in complex Information Technology (IT) projects. The projects span a time period of 10 years, represent a total budget of over 14 billion Euros, and cover such areas as tax collection, social security, pensions, health, traffic control, defense, or water management.We study these reports through the lens of "explainability", focusing on supporting decision making. Furthermore, we reflect on current advances in software engineering, including modern software testing and large language models, in addressing current software engineering challenges. Benevol 2024 : l’UNamur au cœur de l’évolution du génie, de la maintenance et de l'évolution des logiciels

Fin novembre 2024, l’UNamur a accueilli le 23ème congrès de BENEVOL, un séminaire de recherche annuel qui donne la possibilité aux chercheurs internationaux de se rencontrer et de discuter de nouvelles idées, de questions importantes et de recherches de pointe dans le domaine du génie, de la maintenance et de l'évolution des logiciels.

Jean-Marc Dewaele : « Le multilinguisme n’est ni un danger ni un obstacle, mais un véritable atout »

Professeur de linguistique appliquée et de multilinguisme à l’Université de Londres (Birkbeck et Institute of Education à University College London), Jean-Marc Dewaele est un expert des émotions dans l’apprentissage des langues. Ayant grandi en Flandre dans un environnement bilingue, il s’est très tôt intéressé aux interactions entre langues et identités. Il est invité à l’Université de Namur dans le cadre de la Chaire Francqui internationale 2024-2025, intitulée "Multilingualism and language learning. Challenges & Opportunities" en partenariat avec la VUB et l’UGent.  Il partage son expertise et met en lumière l’importance des recherches scientifiques sur le multilinguisme et l’acquisition des langues.

XVIème Congrès du Groupe international de recherches sur Nietzsche

Du 17 au 19 juin, le département de philosophie de l’UNamur reçoit le XVIème Congrès international du Groupe International de recherche sur Nietzsche (GIRN).  Fondé en 2008 par Giuliano Campioni et Patrick Wotling, le GIRN entend développer la coopération internationale dans l’étude des enjeux actuels de la pensée de Nietzsche. Le thème de cette année porte sur un ouvrage fascinant : Ecce homo. Comment on devient ce qu’on est.

Une première en Belgique : une chercheuse de l’UNamur révèle l’histoire oubliée des loups wallons grâce à l’ADN ancien

Entre 2020 et 2025, la chercheuse Julie Duchêne a mené dans le cadre de sa thèse de doctorat en histoire, une enquête inédite mêlant histoire et biologie pour retracer la cohabitation entre humains et loups en Wallonie et au Luxembourg, du 18e au début du 20e siècle. Grâce à une approche interdisciplinaire novatrice, incluant l’analyse ADN de spécimens naturalisés du 19e siècle, son travail éclaire les mécanismes ayant conduit à l’extinction locale de l’espèce. Un travail de recherche rendu possible grâce au soutien de nombreux partenaires scientifiques et culturels.

Le Département de physique reçoit une délégation du CERN

En mai 2025, le Département de physique recevait des visiteurs particuliers : deux namurois, Serge Mathot et François Briard, alumni de l’UNamur et membres du CERN.  Plusieurs activités étaient au programme, allant de la visite de l’accélérateur à particules, en passant par la vulgarisation scientifique et les séminaires thématiques notamment en sciences du patrimoine.  Objectif ? Identifier les domaines ou activités dans lesquels l’UNamur et le CERN pourraient renforcer leur collaboration.
