After this course, the student must be able to:
Define the practice of Requirements Engineering, its actors, its key elements and concepts
Define the Requirements Engineering process, its different stages, its objectives, as well as the difficulties related to this activity
Provide conceptual and / or technical solutions to typical challenges implied by Requirements Engineering in an organization
Address the topic of requirements engineering with a critical view: understand which RE tools are the most appropriate, targeting the strengths and weaknesses of the different theories studied during the lecture, etc.
Address the future of Requirements Engineering in the age of artificial intelligence and vibe coding.
Discover scientific literature on requirements engineering, and be able to find appropriate sources on advance RE topics
Discover a methodology to uncover, represent and validate the requirements of a business towards a new information system. Create a specifications for this future system, and avoid mismatch between expectations and deliverables. Produce a specification of a system that is compliant with the state of knowledge and business processes existing in a given company.
Chapter 1 - Requirements engineering foundations
Chapter 2 - System and context boundaries
Chapter 3 - Requirements elicitation
Chapter 4 - Requirements documentation
Chapter 5 - Writing requirements in natural language
Chapter 6 - Model-based requirements documentation
Chapter 7 - Requirements validation and negotiation
Chapter 8 - Requirements management
Chapter 9 - IA, Vibe Coding & RE
The course is primarily based on a flipped classroom approach. Students engage with the theoretical content before class through an interactive digital syllabus, developed as a SCORM package and integrated into Moodle. This allows them to study the main concepts, models, and theories of the course at their own pace before applying them in class.
Face-to-face sessions are dedicated to the application, experimentation, and further exploration of the material studied beforehand. Rather than repeating theoretical content, classroom activities are designed to help students test their understanding, confront different interpretations, and develop their ability to apply Requirements Engineering concepts to concrete situations.
The course therefore combines a range of teaching methods, including case studies, simulations, role-playing and scenario-based activities, practical exercises, experiments, quizzes, group discussions, and debates. These activities are used to develop conceptual understanding, analytical skills, critical thinking, and decision-making in complex or ambiguous situations.
Students also work on a group project in which they progressively apply the methods, tools, and concepts covered in the course to the specification of an information system. The project enables them to integrate the different stages of the Requirements Engineering process and to experience the practical challenges associated with requirements elicitation, documentation, validation, and management.
Homework and preparatory activities may also be assigned to support preparation for class, deepen selected topics, or continue work initiated during classroom sessions.
Continuous individual assessment: 20% of the final grade (The grade obtained for this component is carried over to the second examination session)
Written examination: 80% of the final grade
