Founded in 1831 and incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1948, the University of Namur is organized around several governing bodies.

The General Assembly, the sovereign body, has powers that are expressly recognized by law (amending the Articles of Association, appointing members of the Board of Directors, approving budgets and accounts, etc.). In accordance with the Articles of Association, it has the power to issue recommendations to the Board of Directors concerning the strategic direction of the University.

The Board of Directors has the broadest powers for the administration and management of the University. Everything falls within its remit except for matters that fall within the remit of the General Assembly. It manages the institution, ensuring the harmonious development of all its areas of competence.

The Rector's Council prepares the Board's files. It examines the files, gathers preliminary opinions and budgetary agreements, and draws up proposals for decisions to be submitted to the Board. It ensures that the Board's decisions are properly implemented and followed up. It also initiates discussions on new initiatives. It proposes a strategic vision to the Board of Directors and the General Assembly and translates it into policies and guidelines.

The Rector is elected by the university community. He or she heads the University and is responsible for negotiations with third parties or with funding authorities. He or she is the legal representative of the institution and is in charge of day-to-day management.

Finally, the Academic Council, chaired by the Rector, issues opinions and recommendations, particularly on research, teaching, and continuing education, in order to inform the decisions of the governing bodies. It is consulted by the Board of Directors on strategic issues related to the University's core missions, as well as on the principles for setting the budget and the framework for the faculties.

The Univers2029 strategic plan

Univers 2029, UNamur's strategic plan, aims to guide the institution in facing current challenges in line with the Univers 2025 plan, thanks to four major levers: innovation, cross-disciplinary approach, reputation, and financial sustainability.  It provides a vision for the future, but is also, and above all, an iterative and participatory process across the entire institution that defines priorities and outlines ambitions. It is designed to evolve over time, in line with new needs and challenges.
