L’Université de Stanford a publié un classement prestigieux qui met en lumière les chercheurs les plus influents dans un large éventail de domaines scientifiques. Cette liste, établie sur base de critères bibliographiques, vise à fournir un moyen normalisé d'identifier les leaders scientifiques mondiaux. Bien cachées aux yeux des passants, les grottes recèlent pourtant des secrets particulièrement esthétiques. Depuis 4 ans, Martin Vlieghe, effectue un doctorat en géologie à l'UNamur.  Il explore l’origine des colorations étonnamment variées de certaines concrétions nichées au cœur des grottes belges et françaises. Avec le Prof. Johan Yans et Gaëtan Rochez, il échantillonne, observe et analyse ces magnifiques objets dans le but de lever le voile sur les mystères qu’ils cachent.

Dans les prochains mois, l’Université de Namur participera à une mission spatiale exceptionnelle à bord de la Station spatiale internationale (ISS), aux côtés de l’astronaute belge Raphaël Liégeois. Le projet BeBlob, porté par les chercheurs Boris Hespeels (Institut ILEE) et Anne-Catherine Heuskin (Institut NARILIS), vise à étudier les capacités de réparation de l’ADN d’un organisme fascinant : le blob (Physarum polycephalum).

Le FNRS a décerné le Prix quinquennal Ernest-John Solvay en sciences sociales à Jean-Marie Baland, professeur au Département des sciences économiques de la Faculté EMCP de l’UNamur et cofondateur du Centre de Recherche en Economie du Développement (CRED) de l'Institut DeFiPP. Une reconnaissance majeure pour une carrière consacrée à l’étude des questions de pauvreté, d’institutions informelles et de développement durable.

Aujourd’hui, notre planète subit des changements climatiques majeurs. Face notamment à l’augmentation des températures, il n’est pas facile de prédire comment les faunes et flores vont réagir et s’adapter dans des écosystèmes perturbés. Une recherche internationale, à laquelle participe l’équipe du Professeur Johan Yans (Département de géologie et Institut ILEE), a trouvé des éléments de réponse dans les fossiles, mémoires de l’évolution darwinienne depuis des millions d’années. C’est officiel : l’Université de Namur intègre le Réseau d’Échanges et de Liaisons entre Institutions d’Enseignement Supérieur Francophones (RELIEF). Elle devient ainsi le quatrième partenaire de ce réseau aux côtés de l’Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières (UQTR), de l’Université Savoie Mont Blanc et de la Haute École Spécialisée de Suisse Occidentale (HES-SO).

Microplastics (MPs) are now ubiquitous in aquatic ecosystems, where their bioavailability to organisms and potential entry into the food web raise serious environmental and public health concerns. Substantial progress has been made in understanding MP toxicity, and their hazardous potential is now widely acknowledged. However, MP toxicity studies remain complex, as multiple particle characteristics, such as size, shape, polymer type, and sorbed contaminants might influence both bioavailabilityTo bridge this gap, the present thesis adopted a dual, complementary approach: (i) characterizing the environmental occurrence and bioavailability of MPs, and (ii) assessing the ecological relevance of using environmentally derived MPs in in vivo toxicity experiments.Overall, this thesis provides insights into the reproductive and transgenerational effects of environmentally relevant MPs while underscoring the importance of considering particle–pollutant interactions. By combining in situ field data with in vivo laboratory experiments, it demonstrates that the use of environmentally derived MPs represents a more realistic and ecologically meaningful approach to hazard characterization. Further studies should be carried out in this same perspective to generate robust, exploitable data and contribute to establishing a comprehensive MP risk characterization.

The research focused on understanding the institutional, social, and structural factors that shape vulnerability and adaptive capacity in this disaster-prone region. Using a mixed-methods approach at local-scale, including institutional analysis, household surveys (n = 904), and field observations, the research highlights how vulnerability is shaped by socio-economic conditions, weak institutional coordination, and limited adaptive capacity. A Contextualized Vulnerability Index (CoVI) was developed to map vulnerability patterns, revealing particularly high vulnerability in landslide-prone and dual-hazard zones. The analysis of adaptive capacity showed that while awareness of hazards is high due to lived experiences, financial constraints, and limited technical knowledge hinder communities’ ability to adapt effectively. The study contributes to the literature on social vulnerability and disaster risk reduction by emphasizing the importance of locally grounded, evidence-based strategies to strengthen community resilience in hazard-prone regions.
