An introduction to (socio)linguistic research.
The ability to critically read academic literature (in linguistics).
The ability to develop a first research project in sociolinguistics, from design to written and oral reporting in the target language.
1° To deepen the knowledge of and about the target language by introducing students to scientific literature and research in linguistics, rooted in Dutch-speaking sociocultural contexts.
2° To introduce students to research based on contemporary (socio)linguistic topics, through progressive and formative learning (bibliographical research, research questions, methodology, data collection, analysis and written and oral reporting).
At the language level, with a pre-requisite of CEFR* level B2 in receptive skills and B1+ in productive skills (acquired LNRL B103), reach a level C1 in receptive skills and B2 in productive skills by the end of the course.

This course on research methodology in (socio)linguistics is based on a “hands-on” approach to theory and practice. Students will be invited to work on a common theme, progressing from formulating research questions and conducting bibliographic research (with training provided by the Moretus Plantin Library) to addressing methodological issues and collecting ‘real world’ data.
These skills will be activated during the seminar (‘werkcollege’).
A selection of scientific articles in Dutch, focusing on the Dutch language, will serve as an introduction to various fields of linguistics, to scientific terminology, and to basic linguistic concepts. Reading these articles will enable students to learn how to approach and read scientific literature, as well as to analyze it critically.
In the second semester, as part of the seminar (‘werkcollege’), students will report on their research process and findings in an oral presentation and a written paper. This group project will be closely supervised by the teaching assistant and the professor.
This course and the exercises are conducted in Dutch during both the first and second semesters to facilitate a gradual acquisition of research skills in (socio)linguistics and the various language skills specific to scientific reporting.
Participation in any activity organized by the department, whether on campus or off campus, as part of this course is an integral part of the program and is therefore considered mandatory.

This is a hands-on, interactive course that requires the (pro-)active participation of students.
At the same time, the seminar (‘werkcollege’) is supervised by the teaching assistant, and does also require active participation by the students before, during and after the sessions, to enable them to acquire stepwise the required skills.
Level required for language proficiency at the end of the course: receptive skills C1; productive skills minimum B2+ of the European Framework of Reference for Languages (see https://erk-nederlands.taalunie.org).
No AI will be accepted to produce texts or content, either in the formative or summative assessment phases.
Continuous assessment is based on the practical assignments organized as part of the course and the seminar (‘werkcollege’).
The final grade is calculated as follows: 10% for continuous assessment, 10% for the writing of a scientifically oriented argumentative text (written exam), 10% for linguistic terminology and analytical skills in linguistics (oral exam), and 70% for the research project (written and oral report).
However, any grade of 8/20 or lower in any of the above components indicates a major deficiency in linguistic competence and/or in language proficiency; this means that the final grade will not be equal to the weighted average but will instead be set equal to that grade of 8/20 or lower.
