Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to:


1) Chronologically situate certain canonical Spanish and Italian texts in relation to their possible French counterparts,


2) Describe and analyze them in their historical context and according to literary genre or movement,


3) Describe different forms of literary influence (topical, rewriting, architext, etc.) and illustrate them with textual examples from the Romance area.

Content

By examining some of the major literary models that emerged in the Romance-speaking world between the 12th and 17th centuries, this course will explore various types of interaction between French, Spanish, and Italian literature and their classical sources.

This historical overview will focus on three main areas:

I. French models of the medieval period

II. Italian models of the Renaissance

III. Spanish models of the Golden Age

IV. Concluding seminar
