Learning outcomes

• to acquire theoretical knowledge in the fields of media history and sociology;

• to acquire a critical and analytical view of the evolution and functioning of the media (in relation to the political sphere, professional issues and the cultural field);

• become able to consider different views on the social role of the media.

Goals

The course aims to present the major technical, social, political and economic evolutions of the media and the related sociological views.

Content

The course will be structured around four chapters: "Media and the Political Sphere"; "Media, Public Space and Social Movements"; "Media, Culture, and Cultural Mediation". In each chapter, sociological and historical elements will be presented by the teachers. Guest speakers will occasionally contribute to the course.

Teaching methods

The lectures will alternate between theoretical presentations, practical exercises, guest speakers and debates. Students will be required to prepare certain sessions from documents that will be provided to them as they go along.

Assessment method

The assessment consists of two parts:

- a closed-book written exam in which students will be tested on both the course material and the content of the interviews with guest speakers;

- a group project.
