The course aims to provide the necessary theoretical, conceptual and empirical foundations to understand the field of human management. To this end, it examines traditional HR practices in light of the 3R model (reflexivity, real work and recognition), offering an alternative perspective on managing people within organizations.
Learning outcomes:
1. Situate the emergence of human management within the context of a critique of traditional HRM models and practices, as well as organizational behaviours.
2. Interpret contemporary organizational and managerial phenomena through critical analysis.
3. Identify the challenges relating to motivation, satisfaction, commitment and engagement at work.
4. Identify and foster conditions that create meaning and recognition at work.
5. Interpret the complexity of relationships between individuals and organizations (e.g. the psychological contract, sense of belonging, governance and working community).
6. Reflect on your future managerial approach.
The course places particular emphasis on contextualizing Human Management practices. This involves considering contemporary societal changes, such as the use of technology, environmental transitions and individualization, as well as organizational and institutional dimensions.
The course aims to develop your analytical skills by equipping you with theoretical frameworks and practical knowledge applicable within an organization, thereby preparing you for managing individuals and teams.
More specifically, the course will consist of six main modules:
1. Changes in the world of work and sustainable approaches
2. The Role of the Manager: Approaches, Skills and Challenges
3. Attitudes and commitment towards work: the importance of recognition
4. Ethics and professional conduct in managing people: towards a ‘human-centered’ approach for managers?
5. Understanding the complex relationships between individuals and organizations (e.g. the psychological contract, sense of belonging, governance, and the working community).
6. Reflect on your future managerial approach.
The Human Resource Management course is based on two complementary approaches to learning the subject.
• Lectures are the primary learning resource.
• Interactive sessions based on unique course materials designed to help you understand the content presented.
Unless otherwise stated (e.g. a reference to an article), these two sources, together with your notes, will form the basis of the written examination.
Learning outcomes are assessed through a written examination (70%) and a short, individual reflective assignment 30%).
