Statistics usually focus on anticipating events that fall within the norm. But what about rare events? They are dealt with by a branch of mathematics called extreme value theory, in which Anna Kiriliouk, lecturer in statistics at UNamur, is a specialist. Applied to the climate, this theory enables us to better predict extreme climatic events, at a time when these are multiplying due to climate change.

In May 2025, the Department of Physics welcomed two special visitors: Serge Mathot and François Briard from Namur, both alumni of UNamur and members of CERN. Several activities were on the program, ranging from a visit to the particle accelerator, to science popularization and thematic seminars, particularly in heritage sciences. The aim? To identify areas or activities in which UNamur and CERN could strengthen their collaboration.

With the PHOENIX project, UNamur is revisiting a long-standing area of expertise: heritage sciences. Using cutting-edge techniques and artificial intelligence, a transdisciplinary team of experts in history, archaeology, and physics has set out to renew our understanding of heritage objects in order to uncover their origins, methods of production, and uses. Under their scrutiny: ancient coins and medieval parchments. 

At UNamur, parchments are much more than objects of curiosity: they are at the heart of an interdisciplinary scientific adventure. Starting with historical sciences and conservation, the research has gradually incorporated the disciplines of physics, biology, chemistry, and archaeology.  This convergence has given rise to research in heritage sciences, driving innovative projects such as Marine Appart's doctoral work, supervised by Professor Olivier Deparis. This research has now been recognized with a publication in the prestigious journal Heritage Science (Nature Publishing Group).

The F.R.S.-FNRS has just published the results of its various 2025 calls for proposals. These include the "Credits & Projects" and "WelCHANGE" calls, as well as the "FRIA" (Fund for Research Training in Industry and Agriculture) and "FRESH" (Fund for Research in the Humanities) calls, which aim to support doctoral theses. What are the results for UNamur? Twenty-eight projects have been selected, demonstrating the quality and richness of research at UNamur. 

The IBAF Meetings have been organized since 2003, every two years since 2008, by the Ion Beams Division of the French Vacuum Society (SFV), the oldest national vacuum society in the world, which celebrated its 80th anniversary in 2025.As in previous editions, IBAF 2026 will offer a rich and varied program with guest lectures, oral and poster presentations, and technical sessions. All this will be complemented by an industrial presence to promote exchanges between research and innovation. The conference will cover a wide range of topics, from ion beam instruments and techniques to the physics of ion-matter interactions, including the analysis and modification of materials, applications in the life sciences, earth and environmental sciences, and heritage sciences. Intended primarily for master’s and doctoral students, this program will aim to guide participants through a step-by-step process of mastering the fundamentals of diplomatic science. To this end, it will combine lectures delivered by members of the team, opportunities to meet and exchange ideas with internationally recognized specialists in the field, and practical exercises using unpublished documentary collections held at the State Archives in Namur. The ERINN 2026 annual conference, organized by the CRED Research Center at the DeFiPP Institute, took place on June 15 and 16, 2026, at the EMCP Faculty. Funded by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation’s ARC IDnomics project, the conference explored the interaction between rapidly evolving social identities and public policy, as well as the impact of these factors on societal behaviors and economic choices.It also welcomed a distinguished guest: Professor George Arthur Akerlof, a 2001 recipient of the Alfred Nobel Prize in Economic Science.  In the interview Professor Akerlof granted us, he reflects on the origins of his career but does not discuss equations or economic models.
