Learning outcomes

The course aims to enable students to understand a German text at the A1/A2 level that is related to their field of study.

Students will learn to identify basic structures and grammatical concepts that allow them to understand the overall meaning of a text.

The course also aims to help students acquire a core vocabulary common to all disciplines (connectors, conjunctions, expressions of time and place, discourse organization, etc.), making it easier to understand texts written in German.

⟶ The course is not intended to develop oral or written production skills.

Goals

At the end of this course unit, students will be able to:

  • understand the overall message of an A2-level text, using tools such as a dictionary or a grammar guide, translate certain parts of it, and answer comprehension questions in French;

  • recognize basic grammatical structures (such as the part of speech of a word, the tense of a verb, or the case of an article or adjective);

  • demonstrate receptive knowledge of the vocabulary covered during the course (texts and audio materials).

Content

The course introduces students to various reading techniques that enable them to understand texts written in a foreign language. Students will learn the fundamentals of German syntax and morphology.

Teaching methods

Classes (2 hours per week) are conducted in person and take the form of interactive seminars. Students are expected to participate actively in class and to complete regular independent study and coursework at home.

This course is worth 3 ECTS credits, which corresponds to approximately 90 hours of work.

Assessment method

The assessment for this course is divided as follows:

Continuous assessment: 20%

One test during the semester, consisting of:

  • a listening comprehension assessment (10%),

  • a reading comprehension assessment (10%),

both scheduled on the same day.

To validate the final grade for LCDLB011, students are required to participate in all parts of the assessment. If a student misses one of the tests, they will receive a grade of 0A for the entire course.

Written examination in the January exam session: 80%

During this examination, students will be required to:

  1. Understand an A2-level text with the aid of a dictionary and a grammar reference, and answer comprehension questions in French;

  2. Recognize the vocabulary covered in class (gap-fill exercises) and identify basic grammatical structures.

In the event of a resit examination (second session), the August exam will account for 100% of the final grade.
