This course aims to train students in analyzing radiation risks and implementing radiation protection procedures tailored to research laboratories.
Within this framework, students learn to rigorously assess all risks associated with handling radioactive substances or operating external radiation generators. Based on this assessment, they are required to design experimental protocols in compliance with current safety standards and regulations.
Beyond purely technical aspects, this course develops the professional posture and critical thinking essential for scientists. Students learn to distinguish established scientific facts from opinions or preconceived ideas regarding radioactivity.
The aim of this course is to enable students to combine and use various physics concepts to apply them to radiation protection.
The theoretical part is structured around the following chapters:
Radiation and radioactivity
Interaction of radiation with matter and biological effects
Detection and measurement of radiation
Principles of radiation protection and legal framework
Applications
This course is given in the form of a lecture (Power Point and blackboard).
The evaluation takes place during the exam session in the form of an open-book oral examination. Each student is given preparation time to answer a randomly drawn question, which they then present orally.
