Learning outcomes

In the following description, the term "experiment" covers both wet lab (SCHIB311, SCHIB314, SCHIB315, SCHIB316, SCHIB317) and computer experiments (SCHIB312).

The goal of this work is to give the student the opportunity to write a scientific report and present part of an experimental work. It includes:

- a bibliographic search

- an oral presentation

- a defence based on basic and advances questions related to the subject.

 

At the end of this teaching unit, the student will be able to :

- place a lab experiment in a wider scientist context, through a personal bibliographic search and by making links between diffrerent fields of Chemistry;

- do a bibliographic search, using tools taught during previous courses and formations;

- write a scientific document with a style close to a scientific paper, using computer tools taught during previous formations and courses and applied for their lab reports;

- present a clear and well-structured scientific talk, using a readable, original, and well-designed visual support, built using computer tools taught during previous formations and courses;

- clearly and correctly answer questions, using basic and subject-related knowledge.



 

 

Goals

The objective of the personal work is to confront the student with the writing of a scientific document, and with the oral presentation and defense of experimental results placed in a context more general than the lab experiment itself.

Content

Based on one of the experiments the student has performed as part of the practical labs (SCHIB311, SCHIB312, SCHIB314, SCHIB315, SCHIB316, SCHIB317), a written report must be prepared and presented orally. Basics of the theory must also be presented together with a bibliographic context of the experiment. Links with other experiments are welcome. Possibly, additional experiments can be proposed.

The subject of the personal work must not be related at all with the teaching unit SCHIM113 (Introduction to Scientific Research).

Teaching methods

Personal work.

The student wil have access to his/her own lab report corresponding to the talk subject and to the related assistant comments.

Assessment method

Students must submit a written assignment and PDF files of all cited references. Each written assignment will be reviewed initially by the course instructors. If the written assignment is unsatisfactory and/or does not comply with the guidelines posted on Webcampus, the student will not be permitted to proceed to the next stage of the assessment, and an overall grade of 0 will be assigned for the course. If the written assignment is satisfactory, the student will be permitted to present and defend his/her work orally. During the evaluation, the report is reviewed a second time by two or three reviewers, who will assign a grade for this portion. The oral presentation and defense take place before a panel. After discussion, the panel assigns a grade for the presentation and a grade for the defense of the work. The final grade is based on the following weighting: 1/4 for the written report, 1/4 for the oral presentation, and 1/2 for the discussion of the topic. However, if any of the individual grades is below 50% of its maximum value, the final grade will be 8/20 or lower.

If the student is authorized to be evaluated during the first exam session, all parts of the exam (written report, oral presentation, and defense) must be completed. In the case of a second session, the student must contact the course coordinators as soon as possible to agree on the evaluation arrangements (possible change of topic, submission deadline, etc.). Additionally, no partial exemptions are granted from one academic year to the next.

Specific instructions regarding the work, particularly the use of generative artificial intelligence software, are detailed in the instruction document provided to students at the beginning of the second quarter (via Webcampus).
