The student must be able to understand all the notions seen in the syllabus and during the different laboratories. The student must be able to synthesize a molecule or to assay an active ingredient within a given time frame, based on a protocol provided.
The objective of the integrated practical work is to allow the student to assimilate, integrate and give a practical vision to the different theoretical notions approached in the following courses: pharmaceutical chemistry (organic synthesis and molecular structure), pharmaceutical analysis (analysis of synthetised products, determination of active principles of plants, pharmacognosy (extraction and determination of active principles of plants with medicinal properties.
The practical work consists of the realization of syntheses/dosages of active principles and their analysis. The theoretical aspects of handling, synthesis and dosage will be discussed and the theoretical concepts covered in the courses (pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutical analysis and pharmacognosy) must be mastered.

Practical 3: Synthesis of paracetamol
Practical 4: Assay of willow bark
Practical 5: Assay of senna

The students receive theoretical and practical instructions prior to the realization of these. The practical work is carried out individually. They are supervised in the laboratory. A laboratory notebook is kept by the student. The student will have at his disposal a syllabus of practical work and slides resuming the material of the theory of the practical work but also notions on the safety in the laboratory, the evacuation of waste, the use of the laboratory material,... The student is invited to make additional research to integrate all the notions.
Assessment is individual and takes place throughout the year, particularly during lab sessions, as well as through a theoretical exam and a practical exam.
It is based on four components, each accounting for 25% of the final grade, which is out of 20:
initial quizzes;
lab reports;
the practical exam;
the theoretical exam.
The theoretical exam is a written exam administered in a lecture hall and may include open-ended questions, multiple-choice questions (MCQs), and/or true/false questions. The material covered includes all integrated lab work, particularly the syllabus content as well as the knowledge and skills acquired in the laboratory.
The practical exam takes place in the laboratory. Based on a provided protocol, the student must perform a synthesis or an assay that has not been performed during the academic year.
During the second examination session, the examination takes the form of an oral assessment covering all the material included in the integrated practical course.
Attendance at all laboratory sessions is mandatory.
The passing grade for the course is set at 10/20. If at least two of the four components receive a grade lower than 10/20, the final grade for the course is capped at 8/20, even if the weighted average is higher. This cap is applied after the weighted average has been calculated.
