By the end of the course, students will be able to:
identify and understand the European and international legal framework relating to cybercrime;
identify and understand cybercrime offences under Belgian law;
understand the main procedural issues arising in relation to cybercrime, in particular with regard to the collection of digital evidence, and international and European cooperation.
The aim of the course is to enable students to understand the phenomenon of cybercrime from the perspective of criminal law and criminal procedure.
Given the inherently cross-border nature of cybercrime, particular attention will be paid to the international and European dimensions of the topic.
The course also aims to develop students’ ability to draw on the knowledge acquired throughout the course and to take a critical perspective on the legal responses to the challenges posed by cybercrime.
The course will focus on the following topics:
The European and international legal framework relating to cybercrime;
Cybercrime offences under Belgian law;
Procedural issues relating to the detection, investigation and prosecution of these offences, in particular with regard to the collection of digital evidence;
Issues of jurisdiction and international and European cooperation.
The theoretical developments will be illustrated through examples drawn from case-law and/or practice.

The course will be taught in person, and attendance is mandatory.
The sessions will be based on ex cathedra teaching, supported by visual materials. Students will be required to complete preparatory readings before the sessions. These readings will aim to prepare students for the session and encourage their participation in discussions.
Students will be actively involved in the sessions and will be invited to take part in discussions on the topics covered.
Assessment will be based on an oral examination.
A proportion of the final grade will be based on students’ participation in the course sessions.
