The medical bioethics course should equip enrolled students with the following skills:
A clear understanding of some basic concepts in clinical and research ethics, such as autonomy, beneficence and justice.
Awareness of the importance of the development of bioethics in the Global South.
Learn how to analyse a clinical situation using classic methodological tools.
Be open to the human dimension of healthcare practices.
The medical bioethics course consists of three parts.
1. A general introduction to bioethics, presenting its history and how this discipline emerged.
2. A section on clinical ethics. First, the various moral systems that underlie human decision-making are presented. Particular attention is given to the issue of healthcare ethics in the Global South.
3. A section on research ethics. The three major principles that regulate research on human beings are examined, with a particular focus on the ethics of research in low income countries.
