Can we still speak of democracy when algorithms influence our electoral choices or participate in the drafting of laws? This topic is explored by Aline Nardi, researcher at the Faculty of Law and member of the Namur Digital Institute (NADI).

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary liver cancer. Unfortunately, this tumor still has a high mortality rate due to the lack of effective treatments for its most advanced or poorly localized forms. As part of a partnership with the CHU UCL Namur - site de Godinne and with the support of Roche Belgium, researchers in the Department of Biomedical Sciences are trying to understand why liver tumor cells are so resistant to treatment, and to identify therapeutic alternatives to better target them.

Initiated and coordinated by Bernard Pireaux (UCLouvain), this collective work - co-authored in particular by Professors Laurent Houssiau and Jim Plumat (UNamur) - offers a reference manual to accompany students of medicine, biomedical sciences and life sciences throughout their course. Designed as a clear, progressive and practical tool, it illustrates just how essential physics is to the understanding of living organisms and to medical practice.

Trust of traditional political institutions and elected representatives, rise of authoritarian logics, definition of public services... Democracy today seems to be going through a turbulent zone. What role does the university play in this context? To shed light on this question, we interviewed four researchers from different disciplines: educationalist Sephora Boucenna, philosopher Louis Carré, political scientist Vincent Jacquet and legal scholar Aline Nardi. Their contrasting views sketch out the contours of an issue that is more topical than ever: thinking about and defending the link between university and democracy.

The graduation ceremony for the Master of Specialization in Digital Law took place this Friday, October 3, 2025, in the presence of the Rector, Annick Castiaux, and the Federal Minister for Digital Affairs and Science Policy, Vanessa Matz. In 2025–2026, the UNamur School of Law has the honor and privilege of welcoming Professor Delphine Misonne as the recipient of a Francqui Chair awarded by the Francqui Foundation: “Need for the Environment, Need for Law?” Delphine Misonne is an FNRS Research Fellow, Professor at UCLouvain, Director of CEDRE, and a member of the Royal Academy of Belgium.The organization of this lecture is fully aligned with the Faculty of Law’s overarching theme dedicated to the environment, nature, and our earth—the very foundation of life: “Re-enchanting the Earth.” 

This Francqui Chair offers a fresh perspective on the advances and tensions that characterize the way in which the law currently organizes society's relationship with the environment, as an essential substrate for human life and the balance of ecosystems. Far from presenting this law as having reached its peak, it is its recent major advances that will be discussed, as well as the risks of regression that threaten it. If the ambition to protect the environment has indeed become a legal issue, how are its essential drivers evolving, whether in terms of climate, human health, or the status accorded to nature?The conference will be followed by a local drink offered by the Cercle de Droit, the Régionale la Binchoise, and the Régionale RTM.Free event.
