This course aims to provide students with philosophical frameworks and conceptual tools to help them understand the issues underlying the social and political problems we face today, with a particular focus on the relationship between economics and politics.
The course is structured around four key questions:
• How can we reflect philosophically on the relationship between economics and politics?
• What are the main moral, economic and political theories, and what are their conceptions of justice?
• What is, or should be, the place of work in a just society?
• What is the fairest economic and political system?
The proposal for an unconditional basic income serves as a guiding thread for discussing possible practical applications of each of the economic and political theories and paradigms studied (utilitarianism, liberalism, Marxism, republicanism, feminism, environmentalism, etc.).
The lecture takes the form of presentations by the lecturer, supported by a PowerPoint presentation containing the key elements of the subject matter, text extracts and visual aids (images or videos). The PowerPoint slides are made available as and when the sessions take place. Students are encouraged to participate actively, particularly when specific economic issues are discussed.
In addition, students may be required to read articles or extracts from books relating to one (or more) section(s) of the course. Where applicable, these compulsory readings form an integral part of the examination syllabus.
The examination will be an oral examination, following the same format as that used by the previous course lecturer. Each student will be given time to prepare their answers to two questions drawn at random (30 minutes), followed by a presentation and a discussion (20 minutes).
