Teach students how to carry out a series of experimental procedures leading to a “complete” cell biology experiment, from formulating a cell biology hypothesis to conducting experiments using molecular biology tools. The course is taught in English.
Gain practical experience in addressing biological questions.
Be able to understand and interpret scientific data.
Be able to conduct experiments in the laboratory (manual dexterity, concentration, etc.).
Be able to present data generated in the laboratory and critically discuss the results.
The integrated practical sessions consist of five stages:
Formulate a biological question and generate a hypothesis.
Develop an experimental strategy to test the working hypothesis.
Form disciplinary groups, design experimental protocols, and share expertise.
Conduct cell and molecular biology experiments to test the proposed hypothesis.
Present and discuss the experimental data and the context of the study.
The integrated practical sessions are designed to stimulate critical thinking through problem-based learning. The problem is addressed by combining multiple areas of expertise. Each student group brings together students with diverse and complementary expertise, fostering team-based learning. Each student group conducts cell and molecular biology experiments.
At the end of the two-week integrated practical sessions, students give a group presentation of the experiments they have carried out, including the context of the study, the results obtained, and their interpretation. Each student presents a specific part of the work and answers several questions orally. The student’s attitude and engagement throughout the laboratory experiments are also taken into consideration.
If a student fails the assessment, they will be asked to present part of the results and to answer questions covering all the experiments performed, as well as the interpretation of the results.
