Overview

Since September 2023, as part of the RFIE, the University of Namur, in partnership with the Haute École de Namur-Liège-Luxembourg (Hénallux), has been offering a specialized master’s degree in teacher education. This new degree replaces the CAPAES in the education tracks for those teaching didactics, pedagogy, and training through and for practice.

Target audience

This master’s program is specifically designed for future (or current) faculty members at universities of applied sciences who teach courses related to didactics, pedagogy, and training through practice in master’s programs in education (Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5, who must obtain this degree within six years of their first appointment to a position for which this master’s degree is required. Beyond this period, the staff member may no longer be appointed to the same position or to a position subject to the same requirements.

It may also be of interest, as part of their professional development, to all teacher trainers in continuing education, whether they carry out their duties within inter-network continuing education organizations or networks, or as independent contractors.

The Master’s degree in Teacher Education replaces the Certificate of Pedagogical Aptitude for Higher Education (CAPAES) for teachers in educational categories who will teach subjects related to didactics, pedagogy, and training through and by practice.

The CAPAES is intended for any teacher currently employed at a university, an adult education institution offering a higher-level program, in a Higher School of the Arts, or any member of the academic or scientific staff responsible for teaching at a university (even if they do not previously hold a teaching qualification) who will not be teaching these subjects.

Experience in initial teacher education or continuing teacher education is strongly recommended.

Objectives

The specialized master’s degree in teacher education focuses on the following competencies:

  • mastery of the pedagogy of the relevant discipline(s) or of pedagogy as applied to these disciplines;
  • knowledge and understanding of the educational settings in which one will work and those in which one’s future students will work;
  • the ability to support individuals in vocational training settings;
  • mastery of the specificities of adult education, particularly for young adults;
  • the ability to participate in the design of teacher training programs and to implement these programs;
  • the ability to observe, analyze, and evaluate aspects of professional teaching practice in order to advise and assist in adjusting these practices, drawing in particular on findings from scientific research in education, the pedagogy of subject-specific content, psychology, sociology of education, and gender studies, particularly regarding cultural diversity, socioeconomic inequalities, and gender;
  • the ability to conduct, individually and with peers, a critical and rigorous analysis of one’s own practices and their impact on students and their success, drawing in particular on various disciplines in the humanities, in order to refine one’s teaching with a view to effectiveness and equity. All of these objectives are part of an epistemological distancing and a systemic vision.
