At the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. identify biological risks in a veterinary practice or livestock farm affected by a contagious disease;
2. To propose mitigation measures in all places where activities presenting a biological risk take place (livestock farms, research and diagnostic laboratories, veterinary practices, food production units) in order: (1) to limit the risk of introduction of the pathogen (bio-exclusion) into the facility; (2) to limit the spread of the pathogen within the same facility (bio-compartmentation); (3) to limit the spread of a pathogen outside the facility (bio-containment);
(4) to prevent the risk of human contamination (bio-prevention); and (5) to prevent any environmental bio-contamination and persistence of the pathogen (bio-preservation).
3. assess the level of risk of an activity involving pathogenic (or genetically modified) organisms for:
- the personnel involved (veterinarians, livestock farmers, zootechnicians, facility personnel)
- the human population
- the animal (/plant) population and biodiversity in the broad sense
Raising awareness of the crucial role of veterinarians in promoting good biosecurity practices in all places where activities presenting a biological risk take place (such as livestock farms, veterinary clinics, and food production facilities).
Training in biological risk analysis and general methods of risk management on livestock farms, in research laboratories and in food production units.
The teaching method combines:
6 hours of introductory lessons on biosecurity
self-study (e-learning course developed at ULg) on safety and hygiene measures in livestock farming and care units
Ex cathedra lectures, e-Learning
Course assessment
Two-part examination:
general questions in multiple-choice format
specific questions in open-ended format
