General Practice Education

Clinical rotations during the third year of the bachelor's degree in medicine As part of its bachelor’s degree program in medicine, UNamur sends more than 150 third-year students on general practice rotations each year. To encourage these future practitioners to consider completing an internship in a rural area, far from the logistical amenities of the city, UNamur and the non-profit organization CAPMG are working together to establish host centers in these settings. Scientific studies have indeed demonstrated the impact of completing internships during medical school in underserved regions, with the aim of increasing and improving the success of future medical practices established in those areas. Setting up a training hub requires the presence of supervising physicians, housing, and adequate transportation solutions for the students. Thanks to the work of Aurélie Strickaert, PhD, and Dr. Dominique Henrion at the Faculty of Medicine, the project has already been implemented in the municipalities of Ciney, Rochefort, Ohey, Vresse-sur-Semois, and Viroinval in the province of Namur; Chimay in the Hainaut region; and Tintigny and Bouillon in the province of Luxembourg. In June 2026, 27 students will be sent to these facilities. This unique initiative will undergo a scientific evaluation in June 2026. Contact person: Aurélie Strickaert, PhD - aurelie.strickaert@unamur.be Learn more - Rural Medicine and Training: Clinical Instructors Play a Key Role … Master's Degree in General Practice The issue of underserved areas is central to UNamur’s motivation for establishing its specialized master’s program in general medicine, offered in partnership with UCLouvain. In addition to promoting rural areas, several initiatives are being developed in parallel: local and regional seminars closely aligned with students’ clinical practice, specialized training focused on rural settings, specific technical certifications, mentoring, and more. Contact person: Dr. Dominique Henrion - dominique.henrion@unamur.be Continuing education Sending general practice residents to rural areas requires the presence of volunteer preceptors. Various initiatives are being implemented to motivate prospective preceptors, particularly by highlighting the value of rural medicine, where daily practice differs from that in urban settings (more frequent emergency interventions and procedures, a role within the community, etc.). In this context, specialized and decentralized training programs are organized for general practitioners who commit to becoming preceptors. Contact person: Dr. Dominique Henrion dominique.henrion@unamur.be Image University Observatory on Rural Medicine (OUMRu) See content Image Research Projects See content Image Activities See content

Economy: Why Are More African Women Converting to New Christian Churches?

New Christian churches are experiencing spectacular growth, particularly in Africa. While they are attracting a growing number of followers, it is notable that women are joining them far more often than men. Catherine Guirkinger, a professor and researcher in development economics, examines this gendered phenomenon of religious conversion and the economic mechanisms underlying it. This original research has just received prestigious WelCHANGE funding through the 2025 call for proposals from the F.R.S-FNRS.

Public Defense of a Doctoral Dissertation in Computer Science - Thibaut Septon

The past decade has seen the release of numerous mixed reality headsets. Some are aimed at casual recreational use (for example, the Meta Quest 3), while others are marketed as next-generation computing platforms (for example, the Apple Vision Pro). As these devices become integrated into our daily lives, they are redefining the way we—as human beings—interact with them.Their nature differs significantly from traditional computing devices (e.g., computers or smartphones), introducing multiple paradigm shifts driven by several factors. On the one hand, they integrate and democratize various sensors that enable the use of gaze, hand gestures, and speech as means of interaction, thereby serving as effective vectors for the adoption of multimodal user interfaces. On the other hand, their portable nature implies continuous contextual changes that fundamentally alter interface design and redefine human-computer interaction as their use becomes ubiquitous. To better understand such systems, this research is divided into three areas. First, we immerse users in a deliberately constructed pervasive environment to explore their perceptions while examining their attitudes toward managing intrusive content through manual interventions, thereby highlighting needs emerging from such contexts. Second, we explore new communication channels by leveraging metaphors and designing interaction techniques that use multiple modalities to enable more natural communication, thereby addressing the needs arising from pervasive use. Finally, after designing multimodal interaction techniques, we examine the technical requirements and review existing tools that support the development of multimodal user interfaces, identify the limitations of some of these tools, and address them by introducing a new tool called Ummi.Through these three complementary perspectives, this thesis addresses six research questions and contributes to the fields of mixed reality and multimodal interaction. The juryProf. Vincent Englebert - University of Namur, BelgiumProf. Bruno Dumas - University of Namur, BelgiumProf. Xavier Devroey - University of Namur, BelgiumProf. Marcos Serrano - University of Toulouse, FranceProf. Denis Lalanne - University of Fribourg, SwitzerlandFree event; registration required.
