Namur researchers score highly in F.R.S.-FNRS "Grants and mandates" 2025 call for proposals

On July 1, 2025, the F.R.S.-FNRS published the list of winners of the various doctoral and postdoctoral mandates, Télévie projects and co-financing with the Fonds de recherche du Québec. Among these, many UNamur researchers were awarded funding. UNamur's particularly high ranking rate demonstrates the quality and excellence of research on the Namur campus.

Deciphering resistance mechanisms in liver cancer

Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common primary liver cancer. Unfortunately, this tumor still has a high mortality rate due to the lack of effective treatments for its most advanced or poorly localized forms. As part of a partnership with the CHU UCL Namur - site de Godinne and with the support of Roche Belgium, researchers in the Department of Biomedical Sciences are trying to understand why liver tumor cells are so resistant to treatment, and to identify therapeutic alternatives to better target them.

NeWWS: a new website dedicated to teaching and learning Dutch

Funded by the Wallonia Recovery Plan, the NeWWS (Nederlands en Werk/Wallonië Samen) project is the result of collaboration between teachers and researchers at HELHa, HERS and UNamur. At UNamur, it was the language center that was involved in the development of NeWWS, with the involvement of Christelle Hoorelbeke, Marc Miceli and Sophie Naveau.

"Physics for medical sciences": a reference book to support students throughout their studies

Initiated and coordinated by Bernard Pireaux (UCLouvain), this collective work - co-authored in particular by Professors Laurent Houssiau and Jim Plumat (UNamur) - offers a reference manual to accompany students of medicine, biomedical sciences and life sciences throughout their course. Designed as a clear, progressive and practical tool, it illustrates just how essential physics is to the understanding of living organisms and to medical practice.

University and democracy: a living, sometimes threatened, link

Trust of traditional political institutions and elected representatives, rise of authoritarian logics, definition of public services... Democracy today seems to be going through a turbulent zone. What role does the university play in this context? On Wednesday 18 October 2023, the President of the Republic of Portugal, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, visited Namur and made a stopover at UNamur. Established about ten years ago within the UNamur School of Law, the Center for Vulnerabilities and Societies (V&S) has established itself as a hub for research and critical reflection on contemporary situations of vulnerability. Born from the merger of two existing centers (PROJUCIT and Fundamental Rights and Social Cohesion), it has gradually organized itself around a clear objective: to analyze how the law addresses the realities experienced by people affected by poverty, precariousness, and discrimination, or whose fundamental rights are at risk of being compromised.

Youth Mental Health: A Challenge We Must Tackle Together

Mental health is a major challenge in our society. Among the general population, young people aged 15 to 24 are the most vulnerable group: nearly 1 in 4 suffers from anxiety and/or depression*. At UNamur, which welcomes 7,500 students in this age group each year, these figures come as no surprise. The psychologists who staff the Medical-Psychological Unit (CMP) are indeed facing a growing number of requests year after year.
