In the vast majority of cases, the student’s annual program (PAE) consists of 60 credits. In certain justified cases, however, you have the option to reduce the course load.
Prerequisites
You must be currently enrolled in an academic degree program (Bachelor’s/Master’s/AESS/CAPAES) and request an exemption from the program’s admissions committee.
Tuition fee
Students who receive a tuition waiver or an EBS/ESH waiver during the first semester may be eligible for a tuition fee adjustment (pro-rated based on credits).
Other types of waivers do not qualify for this adjustment.
The different types of cursus reduction
1. Course-load reduction at the time of rnrollment
To be eligible for this type of reduction, you must provide proof of one of the following reasons:
- Academic reason (for example, you have two separate enrollments),
- Professional reason (for example, you are working),
- Medical reason (for example, you have a long-term illness),
- Social reason (for example, you have a dependent family member).
You may also be eligible for a reduction in your PAE if you have a disability, are a high-level athlete, or hold artist status.
When and how do you apply for this reduction?
This reduction can be requested until September 30.
To do so, please submit your request when creating your PAE in the SIGALE-étudiant application (accessible via the Virtual Student Office). This request must be accompanied by the required supporting documents.
If your request is approved by your program’s committee, your faculty’s administrative office will notify you and adjust your course load.
2. Course-load reduction to support academic success
After the January exam period, as a first-year undergraduate student, you have the option to reduce your annual course load.
When and how do you request this reduction?
This reduction can be requested after the January exam period and until February 15.
To do so, please complete the “Academic Support” form and return it to your faculty’s office, duly signed, dated, and accompanied by the required supporting documents.
Students are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor to request this reduction.
Please note: students enrolled in veterinary medicine must complete the specific form available on their BVE.
If your request is approved by your program’s review committee, the faculty office will notify you and adjust your course load accordingly.
3. Course-load reduction as part of a major change
If you are enrolled in the first 60-credit block at UNamur and wish to change your major, you may request a reduction in your annual program (PAE). The committee may also have made this change of major conditional on your simultaneous submission of a request to reduce the course load for the program you are switching to.
When and how should you request this reduction?
To do so, please complete the “change of major” form and return it to your faculty’s office, duly signed, dated, and accompanied by the required supporting documents.
Students are strongly advised to meet with their academic advisor to request this reduction.
The faculty administrative office will forward the form to the program committee for review and decision. Once the form has been approved by the committee, the office will send you a copy and, if applicable, enter your reduced course load by:
- the end of the first semester, if the program change occurs during the first semester;
- February 15, if the change of major occurs in the second term.
4. Course-load reduction for serious medical reasons
If a serious medical condition occurs during the year that prevents you from handling a full workload, you may submit a request for reduced workload due to serious medical reasons.
When and how do you request this reduction?
This reduction may be requested from October 1 through the registration deadline for the June exam period, which is March 1.
To do so, please complete the “serious medical reason” form and return it to your faculty’s administrative office, duly signed, dated, and accompanied by the required supporting documents.
If your request is approved by your program’s review committee, the faculty office will notify you and adjust your course load accordingly.
5.Course-load reduction for serious social reasons
If you are facing a social issue that prevents you from handling a full workload, you may submit a request for reduced workload due to serious social reasons.
When and how do you apply for this reduction?
This reduction may be requested from October 1 through the registration deadline for the June exam period, which is March 1.
To do so, please complete the “serious social reason” form and return it to the Student Social Services Office (sse@unamur.be), duly signed and dated.
A social worker will acknowledge receipt of the form and inform you of the next steps in the process.

6. Accommodations for EBS/ESH Students (students with special needs/students with disabilities)

To do so, please consult the "EBS/ESH Status Application" document and return it to your faculty’s administrative office, duly signed, dated, and accompanied by any required supporting documents
If your request is approved by your program’s committee, the faculty office will be notified and will adjust your program accordingly.
