Learning outcomes

Main specific objectives :

1.     To master the state-of-the art theoretical aspects related to the project by performing a search of the scientific literature;

2.     To understand the main goals, working hypotheses and experimental strategies to investigate them;

3.     To start the experimental work. This can include technical set ups, tests of controls prior to launching the experiments designed to investigate the proposed research hypotheses;

4.     To progressively become proficient in conducting experiments without errors, to become progressively independent;

5.     To critically analyze and interpret the results generated by the experimental work and found in the literature;

6.     To present the project and work products in a scientific mini-article (written document and oral presentation followed by a session of questions and answers). The students must present the context of the project and state-of-the-art in an introduction, describe the main goals of the project and specific aims for the first part of the master thesis, write a material and methods section and present the experimental results in a clear and comprehensive manner (it may be preliminary data at this stage). The mini-article will also include conclusions and discussion points based on the findings, and positioned in light of data already published in the literature. Perspectives regarding the second part of the master thesis are also required.

Goals


The aim of this work is to start the master thesis research project. Students will perform an in-depth and critical analysis of the current literature in the field of interest, will learn techniques that will be used during their master thesis research project, will acquire the first (experimental) results and will learn to interpret and present them.

Teaching methods


This internship is performed under the supervision of a promoter (master thesis director). The academic coordination is taken on by Pr Charlotte Beaudart for the clinical orientation and by Pr Carine Michiels for the preclinical orientation.

Assessment method

Students will write a mini-article in English. The manuscript, the oral presentation and the defense will be assessed by a jury composed of three researchers.

 

-       Written document (in English)

-       Presentation and defense. This is a public event. The timing is as follows: 15 min of oral presentation in English using a power point support, followed by 15 min of defense (session of questions and answers) in English.

-       Promoter’s grade

 

A moderator also contributes to the evaluation of the presentation and defense. The promoter evaluates the work conducted in the laboratory, the manuscript, presentation and defense.

Evaluation criteria are listed below.

 

The promoter’s grade (attributed based on the evaluation criteria described below) will account for 50% of the final grade (25% for the work in the lab, 25% for the manuscript, presentation and defense). If the thesis is co-supervised, the promoter and co-promoter will decide together of the final note.

 

The jury’s grade will account for 40% of the final grade (14% for the manuscript, 6% for the presentation, 20% for the defense).

 

The moderator’s grade (for the presentation and defense) will account for the remaining 10% of the grade.

 

Final grades will be calculated by the moderator, following the aforementioned distribution.
