The Institute's research projects, publications and collaborations include all categories of researchers. Led by academic promoters, they mobilize post-doctoral researchers, PhD students and even master's students (student-researchers).

We study natural photonic structures, in connection with the evolution of certain biological functions in the living world (e.g. structural coloration). We develop bio-inspired applications in the field of materials and, in particular, devices using solar energy. Finally, we use and develop optical material characterization techniques for heritage sciences, notably in transdisciplinary research on parchments.

Material optics and plasmonicsResearch focuses on the structural and optical properties of nanomaterials and 2D materialsbased on theoretical approaches and numerical simulations. We are interested in the physical phenomena influencing the optical responses of materials and more specifically in the links between these and plasmonic excitations.Although our research into the importance of electromagnetic fields at the atomic scale is primarily fundamental in character, we are careful to keep a strong link with experiment and applications. At the technical level, we combine classical electrodynamics(DDA) to account for the optical and electron energy loss responses of structured systems and quantum methods(TB, DFT) to study the electronic properties of materials with, in some cases, the contribution of artificial intelligence. Our research focuses on modeling the optoelectronic and mechanical properties of organic semiconductor materials. Understanding these properties allows us to establish a structure-property link and molecular-scale design rules enabling improved performance of these materials.

We study evolutionary methods for the optimization of optical systemsThe development of optical systems usually involves an optimization stage in which a set of parameters leading to maximum efficiency is sought. The complexity of these optimization problems increases exponentially with the number of parameters to be determined. We have developed evolutionary methods (genetic algorithms, PSO) to solve these optimization problems more efficiently.

We study the atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (CVD) synthesis and characterization of low-dimensional materials, ranging from carbonaceous materials such as nanotubes or graphene to other 2D materials such as boron nitride (hBN) or transition metal dichalcogenides (MoS2, WSe2, etc...).
