At the end of this course, students will have the necessary basis for the more specific biology courses of the bachelor in biology
Through a progressive approach, students will have the opportunity to rediscover the basics of biology seen in secondary school and to acquire new notions that will be essential for them to pursue their bachelor's degree.
The UE SBIOB131 includes two learning activities: theory (36 hours) and practical work (27 hours).
The theoretical part is divided into 2 sections.
Part 1, taught by Henri-François Renard, will cover the first 9 chapters of the reference book "Biology (5th edition, Raven)" dealing with the molecular and cellular foundations of life.
Part 2, taught by Jean-Yves Matroule, will focus on the fundamentals of formal genetics as well as basic concepts of molecular genetics through chapters 10 to 15 of the reference book "Biology (5th edition, Raven)."
The practical component aims to assess technical skills and the application of the scientific method. The practical work sessions will provide the basis for beer brewing, which will be covered in a dedicated session.

Theory Evaluation (can be remediated)
The theory assessment will consist of a written exam with 20 multiple-choice questions and 2 open questions (one for Henri-François Renard's section and one for Jean-Yves Matroule's section). In the MCQ, 12 questions will cover the material from Part 1 (Henri-François Renard), and 8 questions will cover the material from Part 2 (Jean-Yves Matroule). There will be only one grade for the theoretical part. Partial exemptions for either section are not possible.
Assessment of the Practical Component
The practical component aims to assess technical skills and the application of the scientific method. The assessment of the practical sessions includes:
Continuous assessment during the practical sessions
Continuous assessment of students’ behaviour and proactivity during the practical sessions, as well as their active participation in group work
An oral assessment of the group work
The components subject to continuous assessment are not eligible for resit: the corresponding grades are therefore carried over from one examination session to the next. However, these grades are not carried over from one academic year to the next.
The oral assessment of the practical work is eligible for resit, meaning that a failure in the first examination session for this component may be retaken during the August examination session under the same conditions.
Attendance at the practical sessions is compulsory. Any unjustified absence will result in a grade of 0 (absent).
Access to the oral assessment may be refused in the following cases:
Having missed 3 or more practical sessions (whether the absences are justified or not)
Demonstrating a lack of participation or behaviour that negatively affects group dynamics
Calculation of the Final Course Grade
The assessment of the theoretical component will account for 75% of the final course grade, while the assessment of the practical work will account for 25% of the final course grade.
Exemptions and Carry-over of Grades
Passing both the theoretical and practical components is required to pass the course SBIOB131.
In the event of failure of either the theoretical or practical component (even if the final course grade is equal to or higher than 10/20), the grade awarded for SBIOB131 will correspond to the grade obtained for the failed component.
However, in this specific case, the student will only be required to retake the failed component during the second examination session or during the following academic year.
If the student is required to retake the practical component during the following academic year, they will have to attend all practical sessions again, except for the two sessions devoted to the brewing practical.
