Center for Research in Development Economics (CRED)

The CRED is a research entity dedicated to the study of development economics. More specifically, researchers work on issues related to micro-institutions, collective action, market development and political economy. Much of CRED's research is based on first-hand data collected by researchers in numerous countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America. Theoretical and empirical work is regularly produced by a team of 6 permanent academic researchers as well as 10 to 15 PhD students and post-doctoral researchers.

Anne-Sophie Libert's EXTRA research team

The discovery of exoplanets has opened up a new field of research in astronomy. To date, thousands of extrasolar planets have been detected, including at least 500 multiplanetary systems with a wide range of parameters. These detections have raised new questions about the formation, evolution and habitability of planetary systems.Anne-Sophie Libert's EXTRA research team addresses these celestial mechanics issues, focusing on the dynamical aspects that play a crucial role in determining the architecture of systems.

EXTRA - Planet formation

The surprising diversity of exoplanet orbital parameters shows that the architecture of many extrasolar systems is remarkably different from that of the solar system. The wider distribution of eccentricity of the planets detected, the existence of hot Jupiters, the strong spin-orbit misalignment of a significant fraction of them and the evidence of mutually inclined orbits (e.g. υ Andromedae) are several features that appear to be at odds with the formation of the solar system. These observations place new constraints on theories of planet formation. Our studies focus on the late gas phase, where interactions between planets and their natal protoplanetary disk play an important role in planetary system formation.

EXTRA - Systems evolution

Because of the highly diverse parameters of exoplanets, in particular their large eccentricities, the analytical methods used for the near-circular and coplanar planets of the solar system are unable to describe the orbits adequately. Using both analytical and numerical methods, we aim to study the dynamics of extrasolar systems, for a wide range of eccentricities and spatial configurations (coplanar and non-coplanar orbits)..

EXTRA - Habitability

The ubiquitous question of scientists (and of every human being) is the existence of a planet similar to our own, allowing the development of life. Scientists have introduced the concept of habitability to characterize the conditions under which a carbon-based life form could appear, survive and evolve. This concept is based on constraints from different disciplines: from insolation, internal heat, atmosphere, the characteristic periods necessary for the start of the life process, to the shape of the orbit and its stability (dynamics), which also depends on its rotation (spin), the presence of resonances between active frequencies and must include possible dissipations (tides, friction).

Center for Research in Finance and Management (CeReFiM)

The CeReFiM studies issues of finance and macroeconomics. In recent years, several research programs have been conducted on specific topics such as complex financial systems, sustainable finance and systemic risk in the mutual fund industry. In most cases, research questions are approached from an empirical perspective using modern econometric techniques. Currently, CeReFiM consists of a balanced group of senior and junior members who work in close collaboration with each other, as well as with academics and financial practitioners from numerous universities and financial institutions in Belgium and abroad.

Anna Kiriliouk

Anna Kiriliouk’s research is centered around extreme value theory, with a focus on the development of statistical methodology for multivariate and spatial extremes to address challenges in the environmental sciences. Recently, her main interest has shifted towards the attribution of climate extreme events and the study of compound extremes. These areas are of major importance in understanding the complex, interdependent nature of extreme weather phenomena in the context of a changing climate. Specifically, the aim is to develop robust statistical tools that can better capture the intricate behaviors of high-dimensional extreme events, ultimately aiding in more accurate risk assessments and predictions in the face of environmental uncertainties.
