Climate crises, the collapse of biodiversity, and the scarcity of resources: today’s ecological challenges cannot be solved by focusing on a single discipline. They require scientists who can bring together different perspectives, model complex systems, and move from analysis to action. This is exactly what the interdisciplinary Master’s program in Ecological Transition and Sustainability Sciences (MaTED), co-organized by UNamur and UMons, offers.

Program Overview

This program trains high-level scientists who are capable of understanding the challenges associated with the ecological transition, sustainable development, and global change, and of developing concrete solutions to these challenges.

Upon completion of the master’s program, you will have advanced expertise in your primary discipline and be trained in scientific methodology (including experimental methods), and also able to understand and approach other disciplines from a systems perspective and to use tools specific to the ecological transition (e.g., carbon footprint and GHG inventory, life cycle analysis, ESG governance, transition plan).

Depending on your course selections and your background, you will be able to work on issues

  • biodiversity conservation,
  • the management of biological and/or mineral natural resources,
  • pollution and ecotoxicology,
  • energy management,
  • land-use planning,
  • rural and urban development,
  • climate change,
  • green chemistry,
  • health and the environment,
  • ecosystem services,
  • migration flows,
  • sustainable materials,
  • risk management,
  • etc.

You will be able to diagnose complex environmental problems, design solutions based on solid data, and apply them in interdisciplinary contexts—in research, consulting, the public or private sector, and within organizations committed to sustainability.

Target Audience

The MaTED program is open to graduates with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in the sciences: biology, geology, geography, physics, chemistry, mathematics, veterinary medicine, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, or engineering.

It is also open, subject to additional requirements, to graduates with a short-track undergraduate degree from a college in the following fields: sustainable development advisor, agronomy, garden and landscape architecture, chemistry, and medical laboratory technologist.

Finally, it is open to any other graduate, subject to acceptance by the admissions committee.
