Understanding and combating abnormal protein secretion and combating the envelope of pathogenic bacteria: these are the two focuses of two new UNamur projects selected as part of the 7th FRFS-Welbio call for projects. Among the 22 applications selected, Alison Forrester, a qualified FNRS researcher, has been awarded a Starting Grant and Xavier De Bolle, Professor, has been awarded an Advanced Grant. They are both WEL Research Institute Investigators and members of the Namur Research Institute for Life Sciences (NARILIS).

Researchers from UNamur's Departments of Biology and Physics have conducted a scientific experiment to assess the radioresistance of the common black ant Lasius niger. The results of their work have just been published in the Belgian scientific journal Belgian Journal of Zoology. The Namur-based scientists demonstrate a level of resistance far superior to that of humans. Their spontaneous approach also demonstrates a lesser-known approach to scientific research.

While still only a dream, the quantum computer is the subject of intense research. The Artemis project, funded by the European Union (EU) and involving UNamur, aims to develop new sources of single photons, and thus lay the technological foundations. A member of the project, physicist Yves Caudano hopes, at the same time, to further explore the foundations of quantum physics.

At the University of Namur, the MyCoach scheme offers invaluable help to support students in their academic career in the sciences. Spearheaded by the Faculty through Aurélie Tacheny, this project, initiated a year ago, aims to boost student success and perseverance by integrating a personalized support approach. The scheme, which is now being assessed, is based on regular meetings and individual follow-up (four key meetings with students, at strategic moments in the academic year).
