At the end of this course, students will have acquired a nuanced understanding of the crucial questions and issues in feminist and gender philosophy through the mastery of key concepts and the discovery of dedicated literature selected by the instructor. In addition, the student will have developed the analytical, critical and argumentative skills that philosophical practice offers.
This course provides an introduction to the main issues in feminist and gender philosophy, including feminist approaches and contributions to epistemology, philosophy of science, political and social philosophy, and (bio)ethics. The course also addresses, with the help of contemporary texts, more specific questions such as the nature/culture distinction, the social construction of gendered bodies, justice, or the relationship between class, gender and race. The aim is therefore to introduce the specificity of feminist philosophy as well as to address certain philosophical problems and concepts in the light of gender and feminism.
The course is both lecture-based and interactive. Course materials and required and/or recommended readings will be made available to students on UCLearn.
Written examination taking the form of an essay and/or text commentary, open book.
