Learning outcomes

Students must master a problematic issue drawn from the history of religions. This issue relates to both current events and history.

Students must be able to analyse and interpret the documents (written, iconographic or audio-visual) seen during the course.

Goals

By the end of the course, students should be able to critically examine the subject matter—namely, the theme of the apocalypse, through its religious dimensions and across the centuries—and be able to analyse and contextualise the written, iconographic, and audio-visual materials used during the course.

Content

Our world is permeated by the frequent use of apocalyptic themes. We talk about nuclear apocalypse, climate apocalypse, etc. This theme is not new in human history. To understand this theme, the course will focus on the emergence and understanding of apocalypticism in Jewish and Christian literature, especially in the Book of Revelation. We will also look at the legacy of the apocalypse in history, particularly in the Middle Ages, modern times, and the contemporary era.
