To discover, know and understand the main animal tissues (structure and function) in order to be able to position them in the main organs of vertebrate animal systems in Special Histology, Physiology and Anatomy.
Use the basics of animal cell biology (Cytology) to know and understand the morphology of different animal tissues, mainly vertebrates, and relate them to their functions. Become able to integrate them into organs and later relate them to their dysfunctions in pathology courses.

The teaching is carried out by constructing diagrams to explain the structures of cells and tissues. These diagrams are made simultaneously with projections of histological images. The whole of the histology subject is illustrated by the associated practical work which is also assessed at the end of the term.
If the number of students or health conditions allow, the theoretical exam consists of thirty multiple-choice questions (five options). The result of this test (+1 for each correct answer, -0.25 for each incorrect answer, 0 for each unanswered question) produces a numerical value out of a total of 20. A practical exam is also graded out of 20.
The exact assessment methods are subject to change when the exam schedule is drawn up, depending on the practical constraints faced by the faculty administration, or in the event of illness/force majeure/conflict with an internship, preventing the student from taking their exam on the originally scheduled date.
Calculation of the final mark:
The final mark for the EU is determined on the basis of the weighted arithmetic average of the marks obtained in the theory and practical assessments:
Theory: assessed out of 20 and representing 80% of the final mark
Practical assessments: assessed out of 20 and representing 20% of the final mark
If one of the marks is less than or equal to 7/20, the average is not calculated and this single mark becomes the final mark for the EU (concept of absorbing mark). A signature or absence at either assessment will result in a 0/20 for the assessment concerned.
If the EU is not validated, marks for assessments passed with a threshold of 10/20 are carried over from one session to the next, but are not carried over to the following academic year.
Special cases:
If it is impossible to take the exam for a justified reason (force majeure, medical certificate), the student must contact the lecturer (and the secretariat), who will reschedule the exam for a later date, within the time limits set by the R.E.E.
A General Histology syllabus covers the material in this course (Yves Poumay). The illustrations are available on Webcampus. The histological slides are accessible via the web at www.histology.be.
