Learning outcomes

The course of study must make the student aware of the challenges of the study and conservation of tangible and intangible heritage. It should enable the student to position current doctrines and methods in a broader diachronic and historiographic vision. It should awaken different methodological reflections that the management and conservation of heritage imply and draw the student's attention to the interdisciplinary articulation of these methodologies.

Content

The course takes place in the second term and runs for two hours each week. Adopting a chronological framework, it explores the history of concepts arising from movable and immovable cultural heritage, such as conservation, restoration and repurposing. The theory is illustrated by case studies and the lectures are supplemented by one or more site visits.

Teaching methods

Teaching techniques The course is based on a combination of classroom sessions, organised around power-point projections and a portfolio of texts, and on-site seminars, held in Belgium, during which students are confronted with case studies, presented by specialists, or envisaged through observation exercises. These in situ seminars oblige the student to apply the theoretical notions taught to concrete examples and thus stimulate the methodological reflections necessary for the understanding of the problems and stakes involved in the conservation of a site, a monument or a work of art. Teaching materials - Course outline, table of contents, bibliography - Power-points - Reading portfolio.

Assessment method

- The oral exam, lasting about half an hour, during which the student is asked to reflect on a case study. This statement should enable him/her to show the adequate use of the notions taught. small questions, possibly supported by illustrations, complete this first question.
