Learning outcomes

The students will learn the main classes of antibiotics, their mechanism of action, mechanisms of resistance, how to discover/design antibiotics,  and alternatives to antibiotic use (e.g. phage therapy)

Goals

Give an overview of the main types of antibiotics, their mechanism, their pharmacology, the problem of antibiotic resistance and perspectives to face the antibiotic resistance crisis.

Content

              1.     Molecular mechanisms of antibiotics and resistance.

2.     Emergence of antibiotic resistance.

3.     Discovery and design of new antibiotics.

4.     Pharmacology of antibiotics

5.      Alternatives to antibiotics.

Table of contents

3.       Discovery and design of new antibiotics.

4.       Pharmacology of antibiotics

5.       Alternatives to antibiotics.

Teaching methods

Theoretical lectures and article reading/discussion.

Assessment method

At the last session, students present a scientific article related with the topics seen in the course. The grading is based on this discussion.
