At the end of the course, the student will be able to:
This teaching unit is complementary to the SBIO153 course. The objective is to allow the student to approach the subject matter seen in SBIO153 through the microscopic examination of microscopic slides (histological sections, blood smears, ...). The aim of this course is to make the student aware of the distance that exists between an ideal diagram and the reality of a biological specimen. It also aims to understand the external and internal organization of multicellular organisms, including a mammal, the mouse.
The course unit includes 5 practical sessions (lab work) organized as follows:
As this is a hands-on practical training, attendance at all sessions is mandatory. Any unjustified absence will result in a penalty (see “Assessment” section).
Lab 1: Protists (unicellular organisms)
Lab 2: Platyhelminthes (flatworms)
Lab 3: Nematodes (roundworms)
Lab 4: General anatomy of a mammal – Mouse dissection (ONLY for biomed students)
Lab 5: Skills assessment – Test on microscope use
Projection of a short Power-Point presentation to recall and summarise the theoretical material seen in EU SBIOB153, focusing on the aspects that will be covered in the session.
Make scientific drawings for a report, based on the observation of microscopic slides or animals, taking care to reproduce/describe accurately the structures they observe.
Use of appropriate scientific vocabulary to produce a complete legend.
Dissection of the mouse in groups of students, each group being guided by a member of staff (only for biomed students!).
Personalized correction of the report at the end of the session.
The evaluation consists of two components, divided across six Learning Activities (LAs):
1) Continuous assessment during the lab sessions (details will be provided during the lab sessions, and the instructions will be uploaded to WebCampus) (1/3 of the final grade)
2) A written exam during the official exam session (June and August) (2/3 of the final grade)
Since this is a practical training course, attendance at all sessions is mandatory, as is sitting the multiple-choice exam during the exam session.
Any unjustified absence from one or more lab sessions will be considered a breach of contract and will result in a global grade of zero (code: ABSENT), even if the written exam is passed.
In the case of a justified absence, the student must proactively take the necessary steps to make up the missed session as soon as possible by contacting the lab assistant in charge.
