Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:



  • GRAMMAR - VOCABULARY:

Demonstrate mastery of grammar and vocabulary (basic and thematic) at level B1, mainly through reading activities.


  • READING:

Read a text and extract general or detailed information/explain its content/demonstrate understanding; apply reading techniques/strategies to improve comprehension of written messages.


  • SPEAKING:

Report on a cultural discovery related to your field of study in a short video;


Speaking skills will also be practised in class during interactive activities.



LISTENING AND WRITING are skills that will be practised during interactive activities in class but will not be assessed.

Goals

The main objectives are as follows:


-    Introduction to the Dutch language (or refresher course) so that students acquire a basic vocabulary and grammar in Dutch with the aim of reaching level B1 in receptive skills by the end of the year;


-    Reading texts in Dutch in the students' fields of study;


-   Discovering Flemish and Dutch culture and history in a broad sense through texts in Dutch.



After the course, you will be able to read texts related to your field of study at level B1, with the help of a dictionary for more specific terms.


Content

The first term will focus mainly on learning (or refreshing) basic Dutch grammar and vocabulary, with the aim of reaching level A1/A2 by the end of the term.


During the second term, grammar and vocabulary learning will continue, with the aim of reaching level A2/B1 by the end of the year.


The main emphasis will be on mastering grammar in a receptive manner.


Reading texts related to the students' fields of study will begin in the second term. Programmes concerned: Bachelor's degrees in Philosophy, History, Art History and Archaeology, general orientation, Modern Languages and Literature, French and Romance languages orientation, general orientation.


Short listening, speaking and writing activities will also be included in the course to make it interactive.


Students will also be asked to explore a cultural topic related to their field of study and produce a short video report.


Most of the materials will be available on Webcampus.

Teaching methods

Face-to-face classes will take place twice a week for two hours. Students are placed in groups of up to 30 students.


-    Q1:


o In preparation for class: grammar and vocabulary exercises, short translations


o In class: theoretical explanations of grammar, grammar and vocabulary exercises and corrections, short interactive exercises, questions and answers



-    Q2:


o Preparation for class: grammar, translation and reading exercises


o In class: theoretical explanations of grammar, grammar and vocabulary exercises and corrections, reading and listening time, interactive exercises, questions and answers


o Independent work with guidance in class: cultural discovery and report in a video

Assessment method

o November: test (grammar/vocabulary)


o January: written exam on Q1 material (grammar/vocabulary)


o June: written exam on Q2 material (grammar/vocabulary and reading)


o Video (cultural discovery)
