Abstract | The artist’s materials have evolved during history. They have used many different kinds of materials, from raw minerals to industrial organic compounds. One way to look at the artist’s practice is to look at the materials he used and how he changed during his career. This field, called technical art history, is using non-invasive mobile analytical and imaging techniques as X-ray fluorescence, Raman spectroscopy and hyperspectral imaging. We will show the interest of this scientific approach by explaining research cases from prehistory to modern art. |
