Abstract | Due to their formidable metabolic versatility, microbes are able to break down and transform a large variety of molecules, including metals, hydrocarbons, but also xenobiotic pollutants, i.e. synthetic pollutants not found in natural environments. This presentation will describe some examples of microbes able to degrade pollutants, the metabolic pathways involved, and how to exploit such microbes to decontaminate polluted sites. In addition, the future of bioremediation in a world increasinly impacted by human activities will be discussed. |
