Fostering curiosity about the Earth and the natural world: a key to meeting the challenges of tomorrow.

Studying geology means building a solid foundation in physics, chemistry, and biology to understand the Earth—from its internal dynamics to surface processes and their interactions with our environment and human activities.

The Bachelor’s degree in geology is a well-rounded program that introduces students to fieldwork while equipping them with mathematical and computational skills. It adequately prepares students for careers in geology, such as soil and subsurface characterization prior to construction projects (geological assessment), mineral exploration, environmental management and protection, and basic research.

Thanks to their interdisciplinary training, geologists are ideally positioned to take on a variety of roles that emphasize a rigorous scientific approach to solving complex problems (research and development, project management, consulting, and education).

During the bachelor’s program, we provide personalized guidance to our students to help them choose one of the many master’s programs offered at other Belgian and European universities in the field of Earth and environmental sciences. To broaden horizons, students may also spend a semester on an Erasmus exchange at KULeuven or the Institut Polytechnique UniLaSalle-Beauvais (France) starting in the third year of the program.

I was looking for a job that kept me on the move, where office work alternated with field work and laboratory analysis. The theoretical and practical courses given at UNamur, combined with regular learning in the field such as quarry visits and geological mapping, gave me the skills and reflexes of a good geologist.

The Benefits of Geology at UNamur

Sciences études

An introduction to geology starting in Block 1

integrated into the joint module with geography.

Practical, career-focused training

quarry tours, presentations by experts, and numerous hands-on activities.

Close ties with teachers

promoting individualized support and collaboration.

A solid foundation in chemistry, physics, and biology

which provide a foundation in all Earth sciences and allow students to choose from a wide range of master’s programs, both in Belgium and abroad.

The option to complete an ERASMUS semester during Block 3

for example, at KULeuven or at the Institut Polytechnique UniLaSalle in Beauvais (France).

Are you torn between geology and geography?

No problem. The first block is the same for both programs. You can then choose the program that suits you best and specialize in either Earth sciences, where mineral resource management is studied in both space and time (Bachelor’s in Geology), or one situated at the intersection of the natural sciences and the humanities, where human-environment-society interactions are studied in detail (Bachelor’s in Geography).
