Frederik De Laender’s laboratory at the University of Namur (UNamur) is advancing predictive ecology by integrating theoretical modeling, experimental systems, and quantitative data analysis. It is one of five laboratories belonging to the Research Unit in Environmental and Evolutionary Biology (URBE) within the Department of Biology. LEAP is also a member of the Institute of Life, Earth, and Environment (ILEE).

 

Its mission is to understand and predict how ecological communities respond to environmental changes, including climate stress, pollution, and biodiversity loss. By combining mathematical modeling with controlled experiments, the laboratory highlights how interactions between species, adaptation, and environmental pressures shape ecosystems over time. 

Its research supports environmental risk assessment, biodiversity conservation, and resilience planning. 

Working at the intersection of ecology, evolution, and environmental science, the group provides tools that strengthen regulatory frameworks and evidence-based policies. 

Based at UNamur, the laboratory offers an interdisciplinary and internationally connected research environment, guided by scientific rigor and societal relevance. It welcomes collaborations with academic, governmental, and industrial partners seeking robust and forward-looking ecological analyses.

  • Combined Effects of Biodiversity and Stressor Diversity on Algal Communities. Funded by the FNRS
  • SHIFT: How a change in the species composition of forest trees affects soil organic carbon storage in old-growth forests in Wallonia: site conditions, biotic interactions, and reversibility. Funding provided by the Wallonia-Brussels Federation.
  • Acclimatization and strain selection in algal communities. Funding provided by the UNamur Ceruna program.
  • Heat waves in fungal communities of heathland soil ecosystems. Funding provided by the joint UHasselt and UNamur doctoral program.
