Upon completion of this seminar, students will be able to:
Critically analyze research articles in applied microeconomics.
Identify the contributions, limitations, and methodological choices of a research paper.
Write scientific evaluation reports (referee reports) according to academic standards.
Construct and develop rigorous arguments based on formalized reasoning.
Design and justify relevant extensions or generalizations of existing models or analyses.
This seminar aims to introduce students to the methods and practices of research in applied microeconomics.
Through the critical analysis of recent scientific articles presented at research seminars, students will develop their ability to understand research questions, evaluate the methodological choices made by authors, and assess the scope and significance of the results presented.5
The seminar also aims to encourage students to adopt a researcher’s perspective by familiarizing them with the scientific review process and inviting them to develop their own reflections on how an existing contribution could be extended or generalized.
Assessment in this seminar is based on three complementary activities:
1. Writing a first scientific evaluation report. Students are introduced to the principles and best practices of peer review. They write a first detailed referee report on a scientific article. This activity accounts for approximately 20% of the final grade.
2. Critical analysis of research articles Students write short evaluation reports on five papers presented as part of the research seminars organized by the Department of Economics at the University of Namur. This activity may be completed individually or in pairs. This activity accounts for approximately 50% of the final grade.
3. Developing an extension or a formalized argument Students develop an original analysis based on formalized reasoning, which may take the form of an extension, a generalization, or a critical discussion of an existing analytical framework. This activity accounts for approximately 30% of the final grade.
