The health cards

Health card

In Belgium, there is no health card in the strict sense of the term. Your identity card or electronic residence permit acts as your health card. However, there is a document for children or residents who have chosen to have a paper residence permit, as well as a European health insurance card which covers residents when travelling within Europe.

ISI+ card

This card is for children below age 12 and for youngsters and adults who don’t have the electronic card.

This card must be shown in procedures related to health: pharmacy, hospital, medical centre...

You must request it at your Mutuelle (Health Insurance).

This card is only valid on Belgian territory. For health interventions outside Belgium, you must use your European Health Insurance Card (carte européenne d’assurance maladie) (CEAM), also at your disposal upon request at your Mutuelle.

European Health Insurance Card

Before travelling within Europe, you must request this free card from your health insurance provider. It is valid for the current calendar year and is personal to you; you must request a separate card for each member of your family.
