Goals

This course provides an overview of the main legal issues relating to data and information systems. It aims to develop students’ understanding of the applicable legal obligations and to equip them with the practical reflexes needed to identify relevant legal issues and take them into account in professional contexts, particularly when designing information systems or managing security incidents.

Content

The course covers the protection of personal data, notably in the electronic communications sector. It also addresses issues relating to privacy, cybercrime and the protection of intellectual property rights.

Table of contents

Part I – Data and the right to privacy

Part II – Protection of personal data

Part III – Electronic communications data

Part IV – Data protection and cybercrime

Part V – Data protection and intellectual property

Exercices

The theoretical component of the course is complemented by practical sessions designed to reinforce and apply the concepts covered in class. Through a variety of exercises, including drafting assignments, students develop the ability to translate legal requirements into concrete organisational and technical measures. Practical work may involve, for example, drafting policies governing the use of IT equipment, information systems, and digital resources.

Teaching methods

The course combines the lecturer’s oral explanations, students’ preparation of an oral presentation based on documentary sources provided by the lecturer, a role-play exercise, and the preparation of solutions to practical case studies that apply the lessons covered in class to real-life situations. These activities are to be carried out in groups or individually. The aim is to facilitate active learning, with the lecturer providing collective feedback and corrections on the various activities.

Assessment method

The examination covering the theoretical part is a written exam. The lecturer reserves the right to amend the course and assessment arrangements in line with developments in the health situation.

Sources, references and any support material

The main course material is a PowerPoint presentation containing concise explanations elaborated upon during the lecture. The material for each session is made available to students via the learning platform before the session begins.

The learning platform provides students with access to a range of supplementary resources, including documents, bibliographical references, and links to specialised websites. These resources complement the course materials and enable students to explore the concepts covered during the lectures in greater depth. They are also intended to familiarise students with the principal sources of information they may need to consult in a professional context in order to monitor developments and keep abreast of legal issues relating to data and information systems.
