By the end of the course unit, the student will be able to distinguish between the main qualitative and quantitative research approaches and understand their underlying principles; identify a methodological approach appropriate to a research question; apply the fundamental concepts of biostatistics required to understand and develop a research project; present and explain their research project; critically evaluate the methodology proposed for their own research project and adapt it based on discussions and exchanges with peers and faculty members.
To provide the student with the methodological foundations required to develop and conduct a research project as part of their final dissertation/thesis. To enable the student to select and adapt a research methodology to their research question. To support the student in reflecting on and structuring their own research project through discussion and exchanges with a faculty member and peers.
Fundamental principles of qualitative and quantitative research methods. Review of key biostatistical concepts relevant to the design, analysis, and interpretation of a research project. Development and discussion of students’ research projects as part of the preparation of their final dissertation/thesis.
The morning is devoted to teaching on the main research methods that can be used as part of the final dissertation/thesis, including qualitative and quantitative approaches, together with a review of key biostatistical concepts. Students are then invited to present their research projects in small groups under the supervision of a faculty member. These presentations provide an opportunity to discuss and critically examine methodological choices, while also encouraging peer exchange, with students invited to provide feedback and advice on the projects of other participants. At the end of these teaching sessions and workshops, each student will have the methodological elements required to complete their “TFE grid” independently.
Assessment is based on the student’s attendance and active participation in the teaching sessions and workshops. Prior preparation of the final dissertation/thesis project is required to ensure effective participation in the workshops. Insufficient preparation or failure to prepare will result in a grade penalty.
