Learning outcomes

This course presents economics as a social science that explains and guides human choices aimed at making the best use of scarce but versatile resources to satisfy multiple needs. It aims to convey the object, relevance, methods and main findings of economic analysis, and to introduce students to economic reasoning — in particular its capacity to illuminate historical phenomena and sources.

Content

Students will be introduced to how individuals, as consumers or entrepreneurs, act to achieve their goals, to the analysis of supply and demand and its implications for the functioning of our economic system, including the role played by the State. The course will also address the main macroeconomic aggregates of industrialised economies — inflation, unemployment, growth — as well as international economic relations. These notions will be systematically illustrated with historical and contemporary examples.
