The student will be able to understand how the CCFFMG operates and the relationships between the CCFFMG, the student’s clinical supervisor, and the student; to adopt good medical practices in the management of emergency situations in general practice; to master the practical and legal aspects of issuing medical certificates; to approach and conduct general practice consultations and home visits on topics including the appropriate use of antibiotics, clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system, and practical diabetes management; to understand how computers, the Internet, and eHealth systems work, as well as the structure of an Electronic Medical Record (EMR), and to use them appropriately in accordance with the principles of digital hygiene and cybersecurity; to identify primary care professionals, understand their specific areas of expertise, and implement high-quality interdisciplinary collaboration.
The overall objective of this course unit is to introduce the student to various aspects of clinical practice in general medicine, in order to prepare the student for entering clinical practice during their internship. It strengthens the acquisition of the skills required to manage a consultation comprehensively, through the integration of the main conditions encountered in primary care. At the end of each workshop, the student is provided with practical clinical tools that can be used on a daily basis when caring for patients during clinical placements.
This course unit is organized as an intensive one-week programme designed for newly qualified doctors, with the aim of preparing them to be fully operational in their future clinical practice. A series of workshops covers the following topics: the status of the student and the functioning of the CCFFMG; medical certificates; the appropriate use of antibiotics; the management of emergencies in general practice; clinical examination of the musculoskeletal system; diabetology; health information technology and eHealth; digital hygiene; and interdisciplinary collaboration in primary care.
The course unit consists of a one-week programme, including a two-day residential session at the Domaine de Ronchinne. Teaching is based on active, collaborative and experiential learning methods, combining contributions from experts with practical and interactive exercises. The course is jointly delivered by general practice faculty members and a range of invited experts.
As the intensive one-week course programme is designed to prepare students for their clinical placements, active attendance at all sessions is mandatory and will be assessed by the teaching staff. This assessment will form an integral part of the final grade. If a student is absent during this intensive course week, the teaching team reserves the right, for educational purposes, to inform the student’s clinical supervisor. In addition, a written assessment consisting of multiple-choice questions (MCQs) and open-ended questions will be conducted remotely and on an open-book basis at the end of Q1.
