Learning outcomes

By the end of the course unit, the student will be able to identify and apply in clinical practice the different roles of the general practitioner within primary care; apply their knowledge and clinical judgement in real-world settings, and further develop their experience and expertise in primary care and in the conditions commonly encountered in general practice; critically analyse their own practice, in particular by comparing it with up-to-date evidence from Evidence-Based Medicine; further develop their clinical reasoning and decision-making skills in general practice; develop their competencies in prevention and public health issues; assume the responsibilities associated with the role of a general practitioner, and develop autonomy and rigour in clinical practice; establish effective collaboration with other primary care professionals, as well as with professionals working in secondary and tertiary care; develop their communication skills with patients and their families, as well as with other healthcare professionals; apply the principles of medical ethics and professional conduct, as well as the medico-legal responsibilities specific to general practice; reflect on and develop a personal plan for their future clinical practice.

Goals

The aim of the general practice placement is to provide experiential learning of the knowledge, practical skills and professional attitudes required of a general practitioner in real-world clinical practice. It enables the student to apply acquired knowledge within the specific context of primary care, with particular emphasis on the central role of the general practitioner in the organisation of healthcare and in managing patients’ health. Patient health is approached in an integrated manner, combining scientific evidence with psychosocial and economic considerations, as well as patients’ philosophical or religious beliefs. Through direct experience of clinical practice, the student develops increasingly complex competencies in clinical expertise, communication, professionalism, collaboration, prevention and health promotion, management of professional practice, self-assessment and continuing professional development.
