Learning outcomes

By the end of the course unit, the student will be able to identify the links between the environment and health and assess the environmental impact of their medical practice. The student will be able to identify preventive measures and appropriate approaches to patient care in relation to environment-health interactions. The student will be able to identify and manage health conditions and clinical situations related to migrant patients. The student will be able to define health promotion and implement it in clinical practice. The student will be able to identify the medical and interpersonal issues associated with substance use and addiction, and address these issues appropriately with patients.

Goals

This course unit aims to deepen the student’s knowledge, practical skills and professional attitudes in relation to specific aspects of general practice. Clinical practice tools are provided to the student at the end of each workshop and can be used in day-to-day patient care during the clinical placement.

Content

The topics covered in this course unit include exploring the impact of medicine on the environment and the impact of the environment on health, as well as travel medicine and its implications for general practice. The course unit also addresses the management of substance use and addiction, and health promotion in general practice.

Teaching methods

Teaching focuses on active, collaborative and experiential learning methods, including expert-led sessions, practical exercises and interactive activities. The course is jointly delivered by general practice faculty members and a range of invited experts. The teaching methods include simulation-based learning, an educational approach in which students are placed in simulated situations that closely reflect clinical practice, followed by a structured debriefing designed to identify both technical and interpersonal learning points, within a supportive environment that encourages learning from mistakes.

Assessment method

The assessment for this course unit will be based on assignment(s) and an online, open-book multiple-choice examination at the end of the second semester. Simulation-based learning used to support the topics covered in the course will not itself be assessed. However, disrespectful behaviour towards instructors or failure to comply with the code of conduct for simulation sessions will result in a penalty. Decision-support tools and clinical practice tools provided following simulation sessions may be included in the assessment.
