By the end of the course unit, the student will be able to identify signs and symptoms suggestive of domestic violence, address the issue appropriately with the patient, and propose appropriate follow-up. The student will be able to appropriately manage the main gynaecological conditions encountered in general practice, in effective collaboration with secondary care. The student will be able to identify circumstances suggesting a suspicious death in the context of general practice, correctly complete a death certificate, and contact the appropriate external authorities (Police, Public Prosecutor’s Office, forensic physician) if suspicious circumstances surrounding the death are identified. The student will also be able to identify the respective roles of the Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office in relation to their professional responsibilities, and establish effective communication and collaboration with judicial authorities. The student will also be able to determine their role and responsibilities in relation to medical expertise. The student will be able to appropriately perform technical procedures relevant to general practice. The student will be able to appropriately manage sleep disorders in the context of the anticipated INAMI reforms, in effective collaboration with secondary care.
This course unit aims to deepen the student’s knowledge, practical skills and professional attitudes in relation to specific aspects of general practice. Clinical practice tools are provided to the student at the end of each workshop and can be used in day-to-day patient care during the clinical placement.
The topics covered in this course unit include women’s health (detection of violence and common gynaecological conditions encountered in general practice), the management of suspicious deaths from both clinical and legal perspectives, collaboration with judicial authorities, and medical expertise. Another component focuses on learning procedural skills relevant to general practice, as well as the role of the general practitioner in the screening, diagnosis and follow-up of sleep disorders.
Teaching focuses on active, collaborative and experiential learning methods, including expert-led sessions, practical exercises and interactive activities. The course is jointly delivered by general practice faculty members and a range of invited experts. The teaching methods include simulation-based learning, an educational approach in which students are placed in simulated situations that closely reflect clinical practice, followed by a structured debriefing designed to identify both technical and interpersonal learning points, within a supportive environment that encourages learning from mistakes.
The assessment for this course unit will be based on assignment(s) and an online, open-book multiple-choice examination at the end of the first semester. Simulation-based learning used to support the topics covered in the course will not itself be assessed. However, disrespectful behaviour towards instructors or failure to comply with the code of conduct for simulation sessions will result in a penalty. Decision-support tools and clinical practice tools provided following simulation sessions may be covered in the assessment.
