The student will be able to: identify and apply the different roles of the general practitioner in clinical practice within primary care; apply their knowledge and clinical judgement in practice, and further develop their experience and expertise in primary care and in the management of conditions commonly encountered in general practice; analyse their own practice, particularly by comparing it with current evidence from Evidence-Based Medicine (EBM); further develop their clinical skills and clinical approach in general practice; develop their skills in preventive care and in addressing public health issues; assume the responsibilities associated with the role of a general practitioner and develop autonomy and rigour in clinical practice; build effective collaboration with other primary care professionals, as well as with secondary and tertiary care providers; develop communication skills with patients and their families, as well as with other healthcare professionals; apply the principles of medical ethics, professional conduct, and medico-legal responsibility relevant to general practice; reflect on and develop a personal plan for future clinical practice.
The aim of the general practice clinical placement is to provide experiential learning of the knowledge, practical skills and professional attitudes required of a general practitioner in real-world clinical practice. It enables students to apply their acquired knowledge within the specific context of primary care, with particular emphasis on the central role of the general practitioner in the organization of healthcare and in the management of patients’ health. Patient care is approached in an integrated manner, combining scientific evidence with psychosocial and economic considerations, as well as patients’ philosophical or religious beliefs and values. Through direct exposure to clinical practice, students progressively develop increasingly complex competencies in clinical expertise, communication, professionalism, collaboration, prevention and health promotion, management of professional practice, self-assessment and continuing professional development.
Clinical practice supervised by a clinical supervisor. See the CCFFMG Vademecum.
